6-Year-Old Girl Pronounced Dead After Being Found at Home in a Bathtub Filled with Water: Reports

A six-year-old girl has reportedly died in a drowning incident at a home in New York City.

The girl was found “unconscious and unresponsive” in a filled-up bathtub at a residence block in Cyprus Hills, Brooklyn, at around 1:30 p.m. local time on Friday, Feb. 7, as police responded to a 911 call at the home, NBC New York, The New York Times and New York Daily News reported.

The girl, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center where she was pronounced dead just before 3:00 p.m., according to the outlets.

Both parents of the girl were at the residence at the time of the incident, per NYT.

The mother of the child is currently being questioned by police, NBC New York reported. Law enforcement sources told the outlet that this is “part of standard protocol when a child’s death is involved.”

No arrests have been reportedly made at this time.

Law enforcement officials said, per NYT, that the girl was found with “blood clots in her eyes” indicating a possible sign of a struggle though the cause of death remains unclear.

Neighbor Helen Cunningham told the outlet the girl lived at the home with her parents and one or two other children. She shared that the family had moved in a few months ago.

Cunningham said she saw a man, believed to be the girl’s father, join the girl in the ambulance, NYT reported. She reportedly told the outlet that she also saw a young woman being led out of the property by police in handcuffs.

According to Cunningham, police were called to the home the second time that week, per NYT.

The man thought to be the girl’s father worked at a local Bravo supermarket and texted a manager at the store after 4:00 p.m. that he wouldn’t be coming to work as his daughter had been killed, NYT reported.

He said in the texts translated from Spanish, per the outlet, “I’m going crazy. I’m here until God gives a miracle. I don’t know what to do.”

A police spokesperson said the medical examiner’s office is conducting an autopsy, according to reports.

The investigation is ongoing.
