5 Popular Spinach and Salad Kits Recalled Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

If you buy pre-washed greens for easy meals, you might want to check your fridge: BrightFarms just announced a voluntary recall of baby spinach and salad kits for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. You can find the recall announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious harm or may be fatal to young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems. It can also cause miscarriage and stillbirths. According to the FDA, there haven't been any confirmed reports of illness associated with this recall.

The recalled products come from spinach grown by a New Jersey-based farm and supplier for BrightFarms. They are sold at retailers such as Food Lion, Kroger, Wegmans, Giant, and more in seven states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The five recalled products are:

  • 3.50-oz BrightFarms Baby Spinach: UPC Code 8-57062-00492-3 with best-by dates 1/11/2024, 1/13/2024, 1/18/2024, and 1/20/2024

  • 6.35-oz BrightFarms Mediterranean Crunch Kit: UPC Code 8-50051-82501-1 with best-by dates 1/15/2024 and 1/20/2024

  • 6.50-oz BrightFarms Chickpea Caesar Crunch Kit: UPC Code 8-57062-00415-2 with best-by dates 1/15/2024 and 1/20/2024

  • 6.70-oz BrightFarms Bacon Ranch Crunch Kit: UPC Code 8-57062-00416-9 with best-by date 1/15/2024

  • 5.85-oz BrightFarms Southwest Chipotle: UPC Code 8-50051-82500-4 with best-by date 1/15/2024

You can find the UPC Code on the bottom right corner of the package. No other BrightFarms products were recalled.

What To Do If You Have the Recalled Products at Home

Check your fridge for the recalled products and do not eat any of them. You should discard them. The company recommends taking a photo of the product or bringing a receipt with proof of purchase to the store from which you purchased the product for a full refund.
