Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, a time of reflection and renewal for many Muslims around the world. As the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Muharram holds deep significance, not only heralding a new year but also standing as one of the four sacred months in Islam. The term “Muharram” itself translates to “that which is sacred,” underscoring its spiritual importance. Each year, the month shifts about ten days earlier on the Gregorian calendar, moving through different seasons.

The sacredness of Muharram is rooted in Islamic teachings. It is one of the four months deemed sacred in the Quran. While the month of Ramadan is widely known and observed, it is not one of these sacred months.

Observance of Muharram varies among Muslims. Traditionally, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fasted on the 10th day, known as Ashura, to commemorate the parting of the Red Sea for Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). Although this fast became optional after Ramadan was mandated, many Muslims still observe it. For Shia Muslims, Muharram is also a period of mourning, remembering the massacre of Karbala and the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein.

To honor this sacred month and the Islamic New Year, we have compiled a collection of heartfelt Muharram quotes. These expressions capture the essence of faith, hope, and renewal, offering blessings and well-wishes as the Islamic community embarks on a new spiritual journey.

What is Muharram?

Muharram is the first Islamic month on the 12-month Islamic lunar calendar. Its date changes every year on the solar Gregorian calendar. It goes back about 10 days earlier than it took place the year before on the solar calendar. This means that it shifts throughout seasons as well.

Why is Muharram so special?

Muharram is special because it is a sacred month on the Islamic calendar. Sacred months mean that fighting is prohibited in them. It is also the first month on the Islamic calendar, kicking off the new Hijri year. There are four sacred months in an Islamic year. This is noted in the Quran:

“God decrees that there are twelve months- ordained in God’s Book on the Day when He created the heavens and earth - four months of which are sacred: this is the correct calculation.” 9:36

The four sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qaddah, and Dhul Hijjah. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, Rajab is the third month, Dhul Qaddah is the eleventh month and Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and final month. Dhul Hijjah is the month in which Eid al-Adha takes place. Ramadan is a popular holy month, but it is not a sacred month.

How do people observe Muharram?

Before it was decreed in the Quran to fast the month of Ramadan, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. This day is called Ashura (literally translated to mean 10.) It is believed that on this day God split the sea for Prophet Moses, peace be upon him, to save him and his Israelite people from Pharoah and his army.

After Ramadan became obligatory, Ashura became an optional fast. Today, some practicing Muslims around the world might observe Muharram with an optional fast on the 10th day. In addition, for Shia Muslims, Muharram is a time of mourning. The grandson of Prophet Muhammad was martyred in Muharram during a massacre in Karbala, Iraq. This event is commemorated with great emphasis in Shia congregations.
