2 'Squatters' in Custody After Police Found N.Y.C. Woman's Body in Duffel Bag at Apartment

A man and a woman are in custody after a week-long search by police in connection with the brutal killing of a 52-year-old woman in Manhattan, the New York City Police Department confirms to PEOPLE.
The pair — who have not been publicly identified — were arrested on Friday and are considered persons of interest in the death of Nadia Vitel, who was found with her leg peeking out of a duffel bag inside an apartment closet, according to the NYPD.
Police said earlier that the man and woman were last seen in Pennsylvania. On Friday, they were caught by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force in York, Penn., per the NYPD.
Vitel’s body was discovered on March 14 with several wounds after NYPD officers responded to a wellness check, the department confirms with PEOPLE.
Police found Vitel in a duffel bag with several injuries including broken ribs, facial fractures and brain bleed, per the NYPD.

Police say the pair were squatters in an apartment that the victim had walked into. The apartment belonged to Vitel's deceased mother, PIX 11, ABC 7 and CBS News report.
On Friday, NYPD did not confirm any identifying information about the pair. However, ABC 7 states they are teenagers.
The pair were allegedly seen entering and leaving the building, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said, according to PIX 11. Tenants in the building reportedly heard someone opening and closing the garbage chute on what is believed to be the day of the murder, NYPD confirms with PEOPLE, though a date of death has not been formally announced by police.
Police were not able to confirm if the pair had been extradited to New York as of Friday.
