But few of the industry's most impressive pairs are siblings who've managed to each put that coveted "Academy Award nominee" on their résumés.
Whether creating magic together (à la the Coen brothers and Billie Eilish with Finneas O'Connell) or going solo in separate races, these twosomes brought prestige to the family name.
Ahead, here are the brothers and sisters who've earned Oscar nominations.

Both times they were up for Best Original Song — first in 2022 for "No Time to Die" from the James Bond film of the same name, and again in 2024 for "What Was I Made For?" from Barbie — they won, making Eilish the youngest-ever two-time Oscar winner.
O'Connell has been in Eilish's corner personally and professionally since day one, co-writing and producing all of her award-winning work.
"We're not embarrassed to work with each other and see each other in a vulnerable place and be bad at something in front of each other," Eilish told CBS Mornings in December 2024. "Finneas and I have really just loved each other so much for our whole lives, I feel like that's why it works."
"I think that's chemistry," Finneas added. "What her worldview does to my worldview — like pouring two colors into a bottle of water and seeing the third color that's created, like, that's chemistry to me."

Roman Coppola and Sofia Coppola attend New York Fashion Week at The Commerce Inn on Sept. 9, 2024As film is a large part of their family, it's only fitting that 14-time Oscar nominee (and five-time winner) Francis Ford Cord Coppola's children, Roman and Sofia, have also earned Oscar nominations. Sofia scored three for Lost in Translation (2003) — Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, winning the latter — while Roman landed a nod for Best Original Screenplay in 2012 for Moonrise Kingdom, co-written with Wes Anderson.
Though they have not been nominated together, the sibling duo has frequently collaborated, with Roman contributing to many of Sofia's films and helping run their family's production company, American Zoetrope.
"We are very lucky to be able to work together even though we are siblings and it is really great having your big brother with you on set," Sofia told The Talks in 2011. "He knows me so well that he can make decisions on my behalf because he knows what I like."

Julia has four Oscar acting nominations under her belt, including one Best Actress win for Erin Brockovich.
The brother-sister pair reportedly feuded for several years in the '90s, as Eric once said to reporters, "If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.” However, in 2024, he expressed his regret to his sister in his memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far, writing: "I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said."
The actor's daughter, Emma Roberts, is currently following in her father and aunt's Hollywood footsteps.

Thalberg Memorial Award.
"He sees things in terms of black and white. I see the gray, the nuance. I tend to be more philosophical, almost abstract," MacLaine told PEOPLE of her brother in 1976. "Warren's very much into money — lots of it. I'm only three years older, but really, I'm a lot older."

She won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for 1941's Suspicion, and was also nominated for Rebecca (1940) and The Constant Nymph (1943). Olivia de Havilland earned wins for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949), and was nominated three other times.
The sisters were long involved in a rivalrous feud. "She was a brilliant person, very gifted and, alas, [had] an astigmatism in her perception of both people and situations, which could cause and did cause great distress in others," Havilland told PEOPLE of her late sister in 2016. "I was among those and eventually this brought about an estrangement between us which did not change in the last years of her life."
Jake Gyllenhaal & Maggie Gyllenhaal
The siblings have each been nominated for acting in supporting roles, Jake Gyllenhaal in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain and Maggie Gyllenhaal in 2010 for Crazy Heart — she also earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2022 for The Lost Daughter. They supported each other at the 2005, 2010 and 2022 awards.
When asked about the potential of Maggie winning an Oscar for The Lost Daughter (which also marked her feature directorial debut), Jake was caught off guard by his own emotions. "Someone asked me before my sister was nominated for an Academy Award if I thought I would cry if she won. And as I said no, I started to tear up," Jake told PEOPLE in 2022. "I was just amazed and beyond proud of the movie she made. And then the response to it, just extraordinary. She just did something so honest."

These sisters can each boast of one Oscar nomination. Jennifer Tilly was up for Best Supporting Actress in 1995 for Bullets Over Broadway and Meg Tilly was in the same category in 1986 for Agnes of God.
Casey Affleck & Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck was 25 when he took home his first Oscar in 1998 for Best Original Screenplay. In his acceptance speech, the Good Will Hunting writer thanked his "brilliant" little brother, who also had a small role in the film. He also claimed the award for Best Picture for 2012's Argo.
Meanwhile, Casey Affleck's first nod from the Academy came in 2008 for his supporting role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He won Best Actor at the 2017 ceremony for his emotional turn in Manchester by the Sea.
"It would be historically the first time brothers won something separately, and not just the brothers winning, but this will be the very first time someone would win an Oscar who didn't brush his teeth from ages 10 to 14," Ben joked about his brother's nomination during a 2017 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Jane Fonda & Peter Fonda
Jane Fonda has been nominated for a total of seven Academy Awards. She won Best Actress Oscars for both Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978). Younger brother Peter — who died in 2019 — scored a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for 1969's Easy Rider and a Best Actor nod for Ulee's Gold (1997).
River Phoenix & Joaquin Phoenix
Before his untimely death in 1993 at the age of 23, River Phoenix was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in 1988's Running on Empty. Joaquin Phoenix, who was four years his junior, has since been nominated in acting categories four times for Gladiator (2000), Walk the Line (2005), The Master (2012) and Joker (2019) — the latter of which he won.
In 2015, Joaquin joined his three sisters and mother in presenting the first-ever River Phoenix Humanitarian Award at PETA's 35th anniversary celebration.
In an emotional tribute at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, Joaquin credited his late brother to his acting career. "When I was 15 or 16, my brother River came home from work and he had a VHS copy of a movie called Raging Bull and he sat me down and made me watch it,” Joaquin said, via Variety. “And the next day he woke me up and he made me watch it again. And he said, ‘You’re going to start acting again, this is what you’re going to do.' ”
He continued, “He didn’t ask me, he told me. And I am indebted to him for that because acting has given me such an incredible life.”
