13-Year-Old Rescue Dog Learns to Sit for First Time Thanks to New Prosthetic Legs

Technology has improved dramatically in recent years for animals with disabilities. In addition to wheelchairs that can help paralyzed dogs and cats get around, prosthetic legs have also become available. Although it may be hard to imagine dogs adjusting to having a new set of limbs, their ability to adapt is remarkable.

This 13-year-old rescue is as lively as a puppy with her custom-fit legs! Hear her unbelievable story of hope in this video shared on August 18:

Amira (@amira.amiracle) might have a harrowing past, but she doesn’t let that stop her from having a joyful life. Her mom explains this sweetheart is a former Thai street dog rescue who not only grew up without front legs but was found at nine years old and shot in the head. However, since being rescued, she’s been living her life to the fullest, and although she may be a senior, she didn’t let that stop her from learning to walk in her Barbie pink prosthetic legs when she was 11. Now, she can run and play with her rescue siblings and has even learned to sit on command like any other dog. In a subsequent post, her mom explained that while she can use a wheelchair to get around, having these legs allows her to be more like a dog, putting her head low and sniffing the ground. That’s a big deal if you’re a pup, so it’s no wonder she loves them!

Prosthetics for Dogs

Prosthetics can help dogs regain mobility after losing a limb because of injury, illness, or congenital conditions. They can significantly improve the quality of life for these special needs pets, allowing them to walk, run, and play again. Besides enhancing mobility, they can also help reduce pain and strain on the other joints and limbs. They are custom-fit for each dog to ensure comfort and are constructed of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber or plastic. They are usually held in place using Velcro straps or sleeves. While most dogs will need rehabilitation to help develop strength and coordination, pups of all ages and sizes can benefit from these modern devices. Although pricing can vary, most prosthetics cost less than $2000.

People loved seeing this smart girl perfect new tricks. Viewer @gardencatz responded, “Amira, The Wonder Dog, teaching perseverance, joy, determination, and endless love.” That’s for sure. Viewer @deblouconrad remarked, “Never know, she is 13 years old. She has such spunk!” Her zest for life is unmatched!

This precious girl is the perfect example of how much senior rescue dogs have to offer. There are many waiting in shelters, just waiting for someone to give them a second chance so they can have their day to shine, too.
