This 12-Day Adventure in Greece Will Take You Honey Harvesting and Truffle Hunting

When it comes to Greece, we tend to gravitate toward Athens or Santorini. This new travel itinerary, however, will take you off the beaten path.

Luxury travel operator Geographic Expeditions recently expanded its European portfolio with the unveiling of a new trip to less-visited locales around the Balkan Peninsula. Launching in May 2025, the company’s Unexplored Greece adventure will be led by acclaimed travel writer Don George. The 12-day journey offers plenty in terms of ancient history, natural beauty, and culinary experiences and includes stops in the capital, the Island of the Winds, Delos, and Crete.

The trip includes a stop in Chania on the island of Crete.

Your Grecian odyssey kicks off in Athens with the opportunity to explore the area’s archeological riches including the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the ancient city of Agora. The latter is where you’ll find the Temple of the Olympian Zeus, originally built between 174 BC and 132 BC. Before leaving the capital, you’ll enjoy a private rooftop welcome dinner overlooking the city.

Next, you’ll be whisked away to the under-the-radar villages of the Peloponnese mountains to hunt for truffles and harvest honey among the dense fir tree forests. During your stay, you’ll check into the newly-opened Manna Hotel in Arkadia. The trip continues with a flight to Mykonos, a party hot spot in the middle of the Aegean Sea, and then a short boat ride to Delos. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Apollo, according to Greek mythology.

Travelers will get to explore off-the-beaten-path Grecian villages.

On day nine, it’s off to Crete where the Minoans, Europe’s first great civilization, arose. If you’re into Bronze Age architecture, a visit to Knossos and its museums is right up your alley. There will also be opportunities to check out the local villages, chat with artisans, and eat your way around town. Of course, no trip to Greece would be complete without sailing and swimming. Before you go, you’ll embark on a full-day private yacht excursion, complete with an alfresco barbecue lunch. The last day will be spent exploring the charming city of Chania where you’ll partake in a vineyard visit and wine tasting, in addition to touring a 6th-century family-owned olive oil estate.

Rates for the trip start at $22,350 per person based on double occupancy. The first expedition begins on May 11, 2025, followed by an additional voyage on September 8, 2025. Better start planning your Mediterranean getaway now.
