‘10 Things I Hate About You’ Star Shares ‘Horrifying’ Health Update
David Krumholtz, known for key roles in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Santa Clause, recently revealed a major health update that he called "horrifying."
The actor spoke with Page Six at the Cinema Society screening of Riff Raff on Wednesday, Feb. 26, opening up about how becoming "a daily smoker" of marijuana led to the development of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), a rare condition.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, CHS is when you have "cycles of nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain after using cannabis (marijuana) for a long time," with the only reported cure being to stop using marijuana.
"It’s really bad, It’s really dangerous. It’s as serious as a heart attack. It’s horrifying for those that suffer from it," said Krumholtz. “I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I almost died a couple of times."
While there isn't a determined cause of the condition yet, Krumholtz shared how a common theory is that it's caused by overloaded cannabinoid receptors, saying, “You can blow out the receptors, like blowing out an engine, making it that every time you smoke pot — not every time, but if you smoke it enough — you get wildly, dangerously nauseous.”
The Oppenheimer actor claimed that he had "unpaid emergency room bills up the wazoo" from visits due to his condition. He stated that he no longer smokes weed.
"It’s rare, [but] it’s becoming more and more prevalent yearly — like, numbers are doubling every year," he told the publication of CHS, noting that he would appreciate it if a requirement was made for legal cannabis stores to have a pamphlet about the health condition.
He suggested it could say, "Hey, if you start feeling nauseous, stop because there is nothing that works except stopping,” as a warning for frequent marijuana users.
