Secrets of a Beauty Queen

How does cosmetics magnate Bobbi Brown get that healthy glow? Spin classes, sunscreen and a deep well of confidence.

Q: What's your definition of beauty?
A: I find women who are comfortable in their own skin the most beautiful. It doesn’t matter if you have the smoothest complexion or apply red lipstick like a pro; if you don't feel good about yourself, that confidence won't come across.

Q: What is your skincare routine?
A: In the morning, I just splash water on my face. I started doing this once my skin became drier, and I think that's really helped. Then, of course, I apply an SPF 30, rain or shine, every single day of the year. At night, I wash with a creamy cleanser and then layer on a rich lotion, such as my Extra Moisturizing Balm ($120; 1800 661 326) to keep my skin supple and hydrated.

Q: How did you get in the habit of being so healthy?
A: It didn't start from day one; it really evolved gradually throughout the years. That's why you can't beat yourself up if you wander off track—just get right back on. A healthy lifestyle is about constantly adding one or two beneficial things to your routine.

Q: Do you think your healthy lifestyle benefits your skin?
A: Exercise gets the blood pumping, which helps bring oxygen and nutrients to your skin, giving you a better glow than any blush. I work out—Pilates, weight-training, spinning—at least four days a week. To make it more fun, I meet up with a friend; it's like seeing a therapist and having a social life at the gym! I also drink enough water to stay hydrated. To get in the habit, I recommend adding a few cucumber slices to your glass—it seems to go down quicker than plain water. Eating organic food really helps, too. It's simple: what's good for your body is good for your skin.

Q: What's the best beauty advice you've ever received?
A: Take care of your skin. I credit my mom with getting me in the habit from a very early age. She encouraged me to exfoliate, moisturise and wear sunscreen—no matter what. She was also a make-up fanatic and taught me much of what I'm known for—tanning with bronzer instead of the sun and the importance of black eyeliner.

Q: Is there one make-up tip you find yourself giving again and again?
A: Wear concealer. It's the one cosmetic that can make you look well-rested, brighten your face and leave your skin picture perfect in a single swipe.

Q: What non-surgical beauty breakthroughs excite you?
A: Lasers, without a doubt. It's amazing what they can do; they can erase years of sun damage just like that! I had the Fraxel laser on my sunspots, and my skin is like new again. They're costly—but they work. You see a major difference.

Q: What's one thing that would surprise people about Bobbi Brown?
A: I never apply my make-up while I'm sitting down or in front of a big bathroom mirror. I'm always running from place to place, so taxis are sort of like my dressing table.
