Ageless Summer Beauty: Part II

11. Shampoo with bicarb soda to remove grime Pollution peaks in summer, which means there are more free radicals to dull the shine and colour of your hair. To remove residue, add a pinch of bicarb soda to your regular shampoo instead of using a harsh clarifying cleanser; this rinses out chemicals without stripping colour. Bonus: this trick also helps prevent the colour disasters that chlorine and salt water can cause.

12. Sleep on a silk pillowcase "The satiny texture prevents friction from roughing up the cuticle and making hair vulnerable to warm-weather-induced frizz," says James Corbett, owner of James Corbett Studio in New York City. If you’re really dedicated, wrap your hair in a silk scarf before going to bed.

13. Get a smoother shave Wait at least three minutes after getting in the shower before you whip out your razor. "Warm water softens the hair shaft, allowing for a closer cut and longer-lasting smoothness without painful nicks," says Diane Wood, master barber for King of Shaves in the US.

14. Use a make-up brush to enhance hair shine Shine products help restore the moisture and luminosity that your hair loses with increased sun exposure and hotter temperatures. But many formulas contain heavy silicones that can cause limp locks. The solution? Spritz shine spray onto a blush brush and sweep over hair. "The soft bristles help to create a precise, targeted shine without weighing down hair," says Antoinette Beenders, vice president of global creative at Aveda.

15. Prep your shaver To extend the life of your leg shaver by a few days and ensure a smoother result, drizzle some olive oil on the blade, suggests Cindy Barshop, owner of Completely Bare in New York City. "The oil prevents rust and product build-up, which can result in nicks."

16. Self-tan from head to toe To look longer and leaner, apply self-tanner everywhere, says Dera Enochson, creator of Xen-Tan, a company that makes self-tanners. "A uniform application of colour helps elongate, but focusing just on your legs or arms can make you look shorter and stockier"—especially when you're wearing little or nothing!

17. Exfoliate heels in the shower To maximise results for smooth, sexy feet, wait until the end of your shower before you work a pumice stone into hard calluses and rough spots. The extra time your feet spend in the water softens the dead skin cells and makes them much easier to remove.

18. Unclog pores with pawpaw Mash up fresh pawpaw and apply to clean skin for three minutes. "This summertime fruit contains enzymes that slough pore-clogging dead cells, leaving skin soft and radiant," says Karcher.

19. Avoid hair elastics joined with a small metal bar These can snag hair and cause split ends, especially after swimming, when hair is wet and weaker, explains Rick Mahoney, senior stylist at Devachan Salon in New York City. Instead, look for hair elastics covered entirely with snagproof fabric. Try Smoothies Metal-Free Ponytail Holders ($6.50 for a two-pack; 1800 251 215).

20. Spot-treat pimples with a cotton bud When applying benzoyl peroxide to blemishes, use the tip of a cotton bud to precisely dab it on. This prevents the medication from stripping your self-tanner, says Nicole Weigand, spa director at the Beverly Hills Hotel Spa by La Prairie in the United States.
