Before you hand over your smartphone to your toddler to play with, you might want to make sure you've locked it first.

A 14-month-old toddler in the United States was playing with her dad's smartphone when she accidentally placed the winning bid on a car. The cheeky toddler, Sorella, purchased her dad a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite for the bargain price of AU$245.

The first the father, Paul Stoute, knew about the purchase was when he received a note of congratulations from eBay.

Stoute told KPTV that he had been looking at old cars on the auction site with the intention of buying one to fix up with a friend.

The Sprite was listed as a "fixer-upper" on eBay and, as you'll see from the ABC news video, that is certainly no understatement!

However, in a lovely turn of events, Stoute says he and his wife will keep the car and restore it as a gift for Sorella's 16th birthday.

The couple are taking measures to ensure Sorella's shopping spree was a one-off by adding passwords to their mobile phones.

Stoute's wife Christina told KPTV, "It cannot happen again".
