Wills "hardly slept" before royal wedding

The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge on May 18

The Duke of Cambridge, 29, opened up about tying the knot with Kate Middleton in a new documentary about his grandmother, Elizabeth: Queen, Wife, Mother.

The young royal said in the interview, which airs in the U.K. on June 1: "I hadn't slept at all that night because obviously all the crowds were on The Mall.

"They were singing and cheering all night long. So, the excitement of that, the nervousness of me, and everyone singing meant I slept for about half an hour, I think."

As he prepared for the big day at Westminster Abbey, William explained: "The hardest thing was trying to walk down the stairs with my spurs on, sideways. I had visions of myself and my brother colliding and crashing down the stairs."

William also said the Queen played a major role in his wedding planning, revealing that he spoke with his grandmother twice a week over the phone about his royal nuptials.

He said their relationship has evolved over the years, explaining: "When I was younger and a young boy growing up, I'd say probably Queen first, then grandmother. But now it's definitely a case of grandmother first, and Queen second."

He added of his 86-year-old grandmother, who assumed the throne at the age of 25: "That's really quite something, to be in a man's world and then as a woman to suddenly be thrust into the position she found herself. They're quite hard footsteps to fill. There's not much wiggle room left for me to try and find my own path, but I will do."
