MBFWA 2013 Designer Interview: Camilla

What’s the inspiration behind your spring/summer collection?
The ‘Pachamama’ collection was initially born from my journey to South America and Peru. As the collection developed, I was inspired by cultures around the world that have a spiritual connection to the greatest artist of all, Mother Nature. As I connected with Mother Nature, or as the Inca’s call her, ‘Pachamama’, the collection was formed.

What sort of prints and textures are featured in your upcoming range?
The collection features natural textures such as silk, leather and soft cottons, all with embellishments and detailed embroidery. The exclusive digital prints this season are a bright and colourful celebration, inspired by my personal travels reconnecting with nature around the world. A large part of the collection was inspired by my time spent in Peru, trekking South America and learning from the traditional weavers along the way.

In your opinion, what are some of the big trends we can expect to see on the catwalk at MBFW?
When I design I don’t really follow the typical trends, but you can expect to see bright detailed prints with embellishments and textured embroidery in summery silhouettes, including playsuits, shorts, singlet tops maxi skirts, dresses and jackets.

What’s your favourite fashion week memory?
For our 2010 MBFW show, working with the team behind Avatar and 20th Century Fox creating the prints for the Avatar-inspired collection, and perfecting the incredible body painting and prosthetics for my very own Avatars on the runway. It was a really magical show for me. In saying that, I also feel like my best fashion week memories are yet to be created...so watch this space.

What are you most looking forward to at fashion week this year?
This year I’m really looking forward to taking everyone on a journey incorporating all the senses –smell, taste, hearing, sight, and touch. I can’t wait to see it all come together.

What will you be doing after fashion week wraps?
I hope to be getting in a quick rest before jetting up to Brisbane for marie claire’s ‘James Street Up Late’!
