The Marilyn Monroe Dress That Costs More Than Your House

A dress worn by Marilyn Monroe at the height of her career is expected to fetch £360,000 (approx. AU $800,000) at auction.

The plunging red number, which is adorned with black beading and features a thigh-high split, was featured in the film River of No Return, which first hit screens in 1954.

Monroe wore the dress when she performed the song One Silver Dollar as bar singer Kay Weston.

The original owner of the dress, Debbie Reynolds, is said to be heartbroken at the sale - she sold it in 2000 to a private collector and it has been in their hands ever since.

Experts estimate the dress will sell for roughly the average price of a two-bedroom house. While it may seem like a lot, it pales in comparison to the sale price of another dress owned by Reynolds - she sold the white design worn by Marilyn in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch for £1.8m (approx. AU $3.9 million).

"I'm heartbroken," Reynolds said at the 2011 auction. "I don't want to see the collection broken up - it should stay intact. It's a real shame but that's the way it's going to be."
