We are saddened and shocked this morning to report that designer L’Wren Scott has been found dead by apparent suicide in her apartment.

Although it’s unclear if Scott was suffering from depression, the long-time girlfriend of Mick Jagger and style extraordinaire was reportedly $6 million in debt, and recently cancelled her London Fashion Week show due to "production delays".

L’Wren was found by her assistant this morning after the designer asked her to drop by.

A New York police department spokesperson said: "At approximately 10.05 hours police responded to 200 11th avenue.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered a 49-year-old female, unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency Medical Services also responded and pronounced the aided DOA [Dead On Arrival] at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death."

A L’Wren Scott spokesperson issued the following statement: ”We confirm the tragic death of L’Wren Scott. At this devastating time for Ms. Scott’s family and friends we request that their privacy be respected.”

Mick Jagger, who is on tour in Australia at the moment with the Rolling Stones, is said to be “shocked and devastated” by the news. The pair had been dating since 2001, with Jagger’s spokesman today forced to refute rumours he'd split with the designer sometime in the last few weeks.

“There is absolutely no basis in fact to this story," said the spokesperson. "It is a horrible and inaccurate piece of gossip during this very tragic time for Mick. It is 100 percent untrue."

Mick Jagger's former wife Bianca was among the first to pay respects via social media, writing on Twitter, "Heartbroken to learn of the loss of the lovely and talented L'Wren Scott. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May she rest in peace."

Confusingly, Scott's social media accounts continued to update with scheduled posts after she died, with a photo of dresses hanging from a tree labelled an “eerie” coincidence.

Two tweets were also posted, confusing her followers and leaving many to brand her PR team as "insensitive" for failing to remove them.

Scott’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts have since been deleted.

Tributes to the designer have since flooded in, with close friend Naomi Campbell taking to Instagram this morning to convey her sadness at the news. "I am deeply shocked and devastated by the news,” said the supermodel. “L'Wren was someone I knew since I was 17. We travelled the world together many times. L'Wren was someone I always loved. She was the epitome of elegance and femininity yet still had a girlish quality. I will miss her honesty and I will miss her friendship. My heart goes out to Mick and all who loved her and were loved by her. May she Rest in Peace.”

Meanwhile Scott’s close friend of 26-years, Nicole Kidman, is said to be distraught over the news.

"Nicole and L'Wren were close friends for 25 years," a representative for Kidman told Rumorfix.com.

"Nicole is heartbroken and in shock right now and unable to say anything.”

From the fashion world, designer and close friend Marc Jacobs wrote: "Rest in peace, L'Wren Scott. You'll forever be missed."

Jagger and Rolling Stones bandmates Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts arrived in Perth on Monday morning to begin their Australian tour. As we reported yesterday, Jagger’s daughter Georgia May was also set to walk in Camilla Frank’s fashion show in Melbourne this week, but a spokesperson for the model has since released this statement:

"In light of the recent sad news, Georgia May Jagger will not be participating in Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival for the CAMILLA Grand Showcase. We ask that you respect Ms Jagger and her family’s privacy at this very difficult time.

"On behalf of the Festival and the CAMILLA team we offer our sincere condolences to Ms Jagger and her family.

"A huge and heartfelt thankyou to all for your support at this time."

Georgia May heard the tragic news upon landing in Sydney, where she quickly hopped back on another flight home to New York.

It's not yet known when Mick Jagger will leave Australia.

The New York Medical Examiner's Office will determine a cause of death.
