The special reason why the Princess of Wales wore these pearls for her latest outing
The Princess of Wales' last-minute appearance at the Holocaust Memorial Day service included a touching piece of jewellery.
Kate and Prince William commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January — the day Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, was liberated—by attending a ceremony at London’s Guildhall. The occasion marked a rare public outing from Kate, who has slowly returned to royal duties since announcing that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment and is now cancer-free.
For the somber appearance, Kate dressed in all black, wearing a black blouse, black wide-leg pants by Roland Mouret, black pointed-toe heels, and a long black coat from Catherine Walker. As for her accessories, the Princess of Wales carried a black quilted Chanel shoulder bag and wore pearl jewellery.
While her pearl earrings were Queen Elizabeth II’s famous Bahrain diamond and pearl drop earrings (which Kate has worn on multiple occasions throughout the years), her multi-strand pearl necklace was apparently a new piece in her jewellery collection.
The five-strand necklace hails from Susan Caplan, a Jewish-owned luxury vintage jewellery brand. Caplan celebrated the special moment by posting a picture of Kate in the necklace on Instagram. “Today marks 80 years since the Holocaust, and as a Jewish owned brand we are honoured that the Princess of Wales chose to wear our necklace for today’s memorial to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day,” the caption read.
Pearls have long been a fashion staple for royal women, with everyone from the Queen Elizabeth to Princess Diana making the precious gemstone a centrepiece of their wardrobes. Since marrying into the royal family, Kate has followed suit, frequently wearing pearl pieces that once belonged to the late monarch and her mother-in-law.
