YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s label rejects his attempt to acquire masters

In The Know and Complex News have come together to bring you the latest news in hip hop music and culture.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again is seeking full ownership of his masters, but he’s claiming that his record label is making that impossible.

The 20-year-old rapper turned to Instagram Stories to announce that he had been willing to give his label his next four albums for free in exchange for his masters. He said the offer was declined.

YoungBoy did not specify what label or publishing company he is referring to and it’s unclear who owns his masters.

But, YoungBoy was rumored to have signed a five-album, $2 million deal in 2016 with Atlantic Records, which, at the time, sparked a lot of backlash from other artists and fans who felt YoungBoy was worth a lot more.

His second studio album “38Baby 2” debuted at No. 1 and was released in April 2020.

Artists ultimately want to hold onto their masters in order to maintain creative control.

“By owning your master recordings, you keep creative control and you’re free to release your music however you want via whichever channels you choose,” Paul Hitchman, President of AWAL, said. “If an artist owns their own rights … they are in the best position to negotiate with a record company and obtain the best possible terms and controls.”
