In a trailer that accompanied Disney+’s announcement Thursday, we see that the 10-episode new show will pick up directly where its predecessor left off. As the official synopsis says: “X-Men ’97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.”
The cast — featuring several voice actors from the original series — includes: Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, JP Karliak as Morph, George Buza as Beast, Lenore Zann as Rogue, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler and Matthew Waterson as Magneto.
In addition, Theo James (The White Lotus) will voice a mystery character, EW.com reports.
(Speaking of Magneto: Make sure to watch all the way to the end of the trailer to watch The X-Men get an unpleasant surprise.)
Beau DeMayo (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Witcher) is head writer on the series. Jake Castorena (Star Trek: Prodigy, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Chase Conley (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts) and Emi Yonemura (Bunnicula) direct. DeMayo also executive-produces alongside Brad Winderbaum (What If…?, Loki), Marvel boss Kevin Feige and others.
X-Men ’97 was first announced at Disney+ Day 2021. (See what else was on the rundown.)
