Woolworths reveals surprising Aussie twist to Christmas treats

Woolworths has announced its unique launch of Christmas products, this year with a surprising Australian twist.

In response to outcry from customers requesting more Australian made products, the retailer will roll out an entire 23-product strong Christmas Gold range dedicated to them.

This will include items from the bakery, fresh meat, savoury sides and desserts, like a Triple Smoked Bone-in Ham, Chocolate and Roasted Hazelnut Tarts, and a 20-pack of mini desserts.

Desserts including Lemon Myrtle Meringues, Caramelised White Chocolate and Wattleseed Cheesecake and Jewelled Fruit Cake with Lemon Myrtle, will also contain ingredients native to Australia.

“We’re particularly excited about the new Gold bakery range that uses native botanicals, like wattleseed, lemon myrtle, and riberry to create new flavours to entertain family and friends this year,” Guy Brent, Woolworths Food Company Managing Director said.

“Our research shows most customers are more likely to shop with retailers that use Australian native ingredients, and we expect this trend will continue to grow.”

The new products began their gradual entrance to stores nationwide on Monday, with more to appear on shelves in the lead-up to Christmas.

Alongside the Australian made range, the supermarket will provide a host of other seasonal offerings and some novelty treats like its buildable Gummy Block Train.

Vegans will be catered to as well, with egg-free meringues and Vegan Cauliflower and Mushroom Wellingtons among the Christmas products about to hit shelves.

Pre-prepared trays for roasting will be sure to make easy work of a crowd-pleasing lunch, with a cream cheese and thyme vegetable tart and duck fat-coated potatoes ready to go straight in the oven.

A tray of soft buns in a wreath around a tub of brie will likely please the cheese lovers, with small brandy flavoured baskets and snaps bringing a quirky spin to the snack offerings.

More traditional items like plain meringue, fruit cake, fruit mince pies, pudding and shortbread will remain available to those who prefer to keep it simple.

Woolworths’ biggest competitor Coles has also announced its Christmas range, which includes a Ferrero Rocher-like cake, a plant based roast and vegan mushroom gravy.
