Woolworths 'mouldy' cake slices leave customers feeling sick

Woolworths are investigating how two customers on opposite sides of the country both consumed a specialty cake "blooming with mould" that left them feeling unwell.

Both shoppers purchased the Woolworths brand Free From Gluten Iced Carrot Cake Slices and both reported finding substantial amounts of mould inside the cake.

One customer bought the cake from Lutwyche in Brisbane and shared a post on the Woolworths Facebook page warning other customers to stay away from the cake.

“Do not buy these cake slices!! I bought these two days ago and they have been sitting in my fridge since they got home. They are completely blooming with mould on the inside of the slices,” the customer wrote on Thursday.

“The outside of the cake is fine, it's just the inside that is riddled with mould. And they are still inside of their expiry date even now,” the shopper continued, sharing several photos of the cake with the best before date showing February 26, 2021.

“I knew they tasted funny when I ate them the other night. Couldn't work out why I've been so sick until just now! I am really disappointed with the low quality.”

The supermarket responded to the upset customer and offered an exchange or refund if she returned to a store with the packaging or receipt.

Mouldy carrot cake slices bought in Brisbane and Perth

Another Woolworths customer posted a similar complaint about the same brand of cake but with the best before date of February 27, 2021.

The shopper said she purchased the carrot cake from Morley in Perth and had already eaten a slice before discovering the mould.

“I then was so sick and vomiting," the shopper said.

"Didn’t realise why I was sick 'till next morning when I reached for a second slice and noticed what looks like mould or fungus throughout the carrot cake,” she wrote posting several photos of the cake slices showing spots of green mould.

The customer said she had already reported the issue to Woolworths and was offered a refund but wanted the “major risk” investigated.

Woolworths confirmed to Yahoo News the supermarket is seeking more information from the customers and is contacting suppliers to determine what happened. Both customers have been offered refunds and Woolworths vouchers.

"We take food quality and safety very seriously and are disappointed to receive these customer reports," a Woolworths spokesperson said.

"Product quality is essential to our business and we’ll be following this up with our supply partners and store teams urgently."

Woolworths says it encourages customers to contact their local store for a refund if they have any concerns about the quality of cake they received.
