'Won't have to enter the store': Woolworths' innovative new shopping method

With a growing number of shoppers looking for fast, convenient and contactless ways of grocery shopping, Woolworths has started trialling a new self-service pick up locker in one of its western Sydney stores.

Granville is one of four stores that will trial the new technology which Woolworths Director of Format Development Rob McCartney said is “part of our ambition to make Woolworths the most convenient place to shop”.

The 10 square metre temperature controlled lockers found in the car park can hold dozens of orders at a time and allow Woolworths customers to pick up their online order quickly from the car park without entering the store.

After placing an online order and selecting a pick up time, customers are sent a unique passcode which offers secure access for collection.

They can then drive to the store, enter their code at the locker and the order will be dispensed by the automated unit for collection within seconds.

Temperature controlled lockers keep groceries fresh

Mr McCartney said while the concept of click and collect isn’t new to supermarkets, the Woolworths’ units offer an advantage over the competition by allowing customers to purchase fresh, frozen and dry groceries all from the one collection point.

“The units are equipped with temperature control technology to uphold product freshness and comply with food safety regulations.

“This technology has the potential to save our customers a lot of time and effort, as well as reducing congestion at the front of our stores during popular collection periods.”

The Granville locker will be in operation from 9am-9pm. Oversized and restricted items, such as cigarettes, are available to purchase in-store.

Woolworths plans to rollout lockers at three other stores in the next three months.
