Multiply your orgasms

You’ve got to love routines. They get you out of the house in the morning and into the gym at the end of the day.

But relying on a routine to get off? Bor-ing. Because there’s more than one way to a happy ending, and the more paths you travel, the more exciting sex will become. According to a recent study in the journal NeuroQuantology, women have four distinct routes to climaxing – and here they are...

Clitoral orgasm

If you’re like most women, your external sweet spot is the go-to point of stimulation to send you over the edge. But according to sex therapist Sari Cooper, heading straight to the clitoris gives you a less pleasurable orgasm than if your bloke touches, caresses or massages other parts of your genitals before he homes in on that hotspot.

Try this “Have him make big circles with his fingers that include the shaft, labia and upper part of the clitoral hood,” says Cooper.

Up your chances Get him to use a vibrator like the Jimmyjane Hello Touch wearable fingertip vibrator ($75, Maxxxblack). And get vocal – the more you advise him about the speed, intensity and pressure you prefer, the better the end result will be.

Multiple orgasm

To be clear, multiple orgasms happen one right after the other, not at different times in one session (although those are awesome too). Many women feel their clitoris is too sensitive for touch post-orgasm, and a McGill University, Canada, study found that this is because immediately after the O, as the pleasure caused by touching the clitoris increases, so does the pain. But multiple orgasms are possible for women if they can tolerate stimulation after their first (and second, etc) “finishes”.

Try this Immediately after your first clitoral climax, get your partner to continue stimulating your clitoris at a slower speed for about 30 seconds, then resume a normal pace to get you to a repeat performance.

“He’s playing with your level of arousal from a heightened orgasmic state by giving your erogenous area a rest, as it may be overly sensitive to stimulation, and then increasing arousal again,” says sex coach Amy Levine of Ignite Your Pleasure. From there, begin penetrative sex, which, if you’re lucky, may even lead to multiple vaginal or blended orgasms, using the same technique of slowing down and speeding up.

Up your chances The McGill University researchers say lube can help ease your sensitivity to enhance your pleasure. But if your C-spot’s feeling too touchy, ask him to continue stroking it over a buffer like a silk camisole or undies, or have him switch his focus to your nipples – Cooper says touching these after climax can push some women to yet another O. (Nipplegasm? Nothing routine about that.)

Vaginal orgasm

Don’t feel too left out if you’ve never had one of these; only 25 per cent of women are consistently orgasmic during penetrative sex, according to an analysis of 33 studies over eight decades by philosopher of biology Elisabeth Lloyd, for her book The Case of the Female Orgasm. But about half of women sometimes orgasm through vaginal penetration alone. To increase your chances...

Try this During solo time, explore the front wall of your vagina with your finger to try to find an area that’s rippled and spongy in texture. Touching it should feel pretty darn good. Then have your bloke target his thrusting there: try lying on your sides facing each other, with your legs intertwined comfortably (think of two pairs of scissors, crisscrossed). Keep your parts aligned and make sure his rubs against the front wall of your vagina. “This position allows for deeper thrusts that further stimulate the G-spot,” says Cooper.

Up your chances Achieving vaginal orgasm is more likely the longer the sex lasts, says a study in The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Aim for about 15 minutes and switch positions often. “This reduces the chance of your man ‘closing the deal’ too soon and helps your body experience new and fresh sensations,” says Michael Alvear, author of Not Tonight Dear, I Feel Fat.

A warming lubricant can also help – try Durex Embrace ($19.99, Durex), which is two lubes in one sweet package: a warming one for you and a tingling one for him.

Blended orgasm

Sex therapist Cynthia Lief Ruberg, co-author of Pathways to Pleasure: A Woman’s Guide to Orgasm, reckons a combined clitoral and vaginal orgasm is the most powerful (it can be twice as strong and intense as either alone).

Try this Girl-on-top position is perfect for the double-whammy. But you can also try reverse cowgirl (sitting on his lap facing away from him), so he can stimulate your clitoris while you control the thrusting. Or, for a twist on missionary, have your partner inch his body up so your hips are aligned, and tilt your pelvis upwards so the base of his penis is on your clitoris but the rest of him is inside. “In this position, he’s not really thrusting up and down, but rather grinding against your pelvic bone,” says Ruberg.

Up your chances “A blended orgasm is easier if the woman becomes very aroused before intercourse,” says Ruberg. Go full throttle with foreplay – lots of kissing, touching, licking and massaging all over – and if your enthusiasm wanes during intercourse, go back to the heavy petting for a while.
