Bill Granger launches 'Eat Real'

The king of breakfast, Bill Granger, has launched a nationwide community garden initiative, ‘Eat Real’ to get you planting fruits, vegies and herbs in your local gardens in urban areas and on council land.

Women’s Health is right behind this. Why?

The message is simple: “We want Australians to go back to eating whole foods and to understand how easy it is to plant fresh produce,” says Granger, who launched the scheme, partnering with Jordans Cereals last week.

“When I first started talking about this with Bill Jordan, I wanted to make it as easy as possible. There are lots of tips on the Facebook page (see below) and links to make it really easy to follow: how you approach council, how you set up a garden, what to plant every month, how you get rid of pests, how you weed.”

Even if you struggle to keep a cactus alive, spending just an hour every other weekend gardening with your friends, neighbours or kids will teach you something.

“It’s really not hard, we’re blessed with this beautiful climate in Australia which vegetables just love. My favourite plant to grow in the garden is the tomato. It's best bang for buck - a supermarket tomato does not compare to the flavour you get from a homegrown tomato."

"There are even pots that self-water now. Gardening is a cool thing to make time for, not just because of the tasty fresh produce you’ll end up with, it’s one of those little things that makes life pleasurable so your days don’t just run past you in a flurry of meetings, or just being busy. It’s satisfying in a way that’s not just about achieving things or buying stuff or renovating your kitchen.”

(Green) thumbs up to that.
