Woman transforms $7 salad bowl into 'luxe' side table

A crafty Kmart fan has shown just how versatile the store’s bargain buys can be if you use a bit of creativity.

Kiran, from Sydney, transformed a couple of Kmart’s cheap-and-cheerful melamine salad bowls into a ‘luxe’ gold side table that wouldn’t look out of place in a chic homewares store.

She picked up four of the ‘Paradise’ patterned Salad Bowl — which are just $7 each — for the project, gluing each pair of bowls together at the base with Bunnings craft glue. She then stacked one pair of bowls on top of the other, securing them together with glue at the rim.

To make it into a functional table, a plate with a larger diameter than the bowls was glued in place on the top.

Kiran then said bye-bye to the flamingos and palm leaves printed on the bowls and coated the entire thing in gold spray paint.

Pleased with her work, she shared a snap in a Facebook group much to the admiration of her fellow Kmart lovers.

“Epic hack,” one gushed.

“That’s so clever!!!!” said another.

One Facebook user had summer celebrations on their mind, writing, “Looks so luxe... would be great for a party.”

As Kiran explained in a response to a comment, using craft glue meant that the side table wasn’t able to bear much weight; “As I’m using it as a decor item only it’s fine for my purpose,” she wrote.

If you’ve got some metallic spray paint at home, you’d be surprised what you can achieve with some table tennis bowls and plastic wine glasses — it’ll really ‘light up’ a room.
