Woman Drowns in Lake Havasu After 'Improperly Secured' Life Jacket Falls Off
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue and Recovery Team enlisted divers, a Careflight helicopter and scan sonar technology to locate Cynthia Marin

Woman Drowns in Lake HavasuA woman drowned after her "improperly secured life jacket came off" on Sunday in Lake Havasu, Ariz., the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reports in a Facebook press release.
Cynthia Marin, a resident of La Mesa, Calif., died after she jumped from a boat into the lake to go for a swim.
The 49-year-old woman “entered the water, [when] her improperly secured life jacket came off,” said the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. “The victim began to panic, then went below the surface of the water.”

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue and Recovery Team on March 10, 2024 in Lake Havasu, Ariz.Around 2 p.m., the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue and Recovery Team divers were sent to the scene’s immediate area “but were unable to locate the victim.”
In addition to the MCSO’s Dive Rescue and Recovery department, a Careflight helicopter and scan sonar technology were used. Marin's body was found near The Islander RV Resort “in 59-degree water at a depth of 42 feet.”
Marin was not staying at The Islander RV Resort, a spokesperson for the resort confirmed with PEOPLE.

A GoFundMe page for Marin’s family has begun raising money to bring her back to California from Arizona and for her funeral.
“On Sunday, March 10, 2024, Cynthia passed away very unexpectedly at Lake Havasu, AZ,” wrote the page’s creator, Barb McAbee Grim — mother-in-law to Marin’s daughter Barbara. “She has left behind 2 adult daughters, Allison & Barbara, a young son, Julian as well as two beautiful granddaughters, Mia & Iris.”
Representatives for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on Monday.
