Yahoo Lifestyle Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves Tell Us How Much They Love Each Other (It's A Lot)

Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves are in love. Not romantic love, but a real, deep friendship love that is palpable as soon as you enter a room with them. Or, watch them together on screen in their new anti-rom-com, Destination Wedding-because although they play Lindsay and Frank, two intensely grumpy wedding guests, it’s clear they’re having a lot of fun. Even if it isn't exactly fun to be around Lindsay and Frank who complain about legit everything so much you just want to throw them into a wine barrel at this Pinterest-perfect vineyard wedding.
“I just I feel like we have a great chemistry, and I love him so much in life,” Ryder said at a press junket for the movie. Reeves seconded her feelings, adding that one of his favorite moments of working with Ryder was, “everything that happened after the director said action,” to which Ryder replied, “And everything before the director said action, too!” See? The love is real.
In Destination Wedding, Frank and Lindsay are, well, to put it kindly, completely unlikeable and miserable misanthropes. (Who have maybe the most painful love scenes in cinema history.) They hate everything-including, initially, each other. Which, kinda sucks for them, because they spend the entire movie together-in fact, nobody else even has a line of dialogue. Not so great for Frank and Lindsay (at first), but a blast for Ryder and Reeves.
“It was really special,” shared Ryder. “I mean, it was just great to have that time with Keanu. To have him all to myself this way, because we've worked together, but it’s been an ensemble.”
Below, my conversation with Ryder and Reeves on being the only two people who talk in the movie, what it's like to play miserable humans, and their fantasy happily ever after-
On being the only two people who talked the entire movie:
Reeves: I liked it!
Ryder: I liked it, too! I remember thinking, Wow this is for real. Sometimes you work two days a week, but this was a challenge. We were constantly working.
On playing total grumps:
Ryder: We are very self indulgent in our whining. But I feel like the fact that we acknowledge that makes it better.
Reeves: Actually, Frank makes fun of you for being so self-centered.
Ryder: [Laughs.] Right! I’m the problem.
On going dark:
Ryder: In the movie I was like, Yes, I feel like I've thought all of these things before. But I will say though some of the stuff was hard. I could barely…
Reeves: You didn’t want to say it. You wanna go as dark as your character. That's what makes you so brave.
On whether they’d hang out with their characters in the movie:
Reeves: No. Maybe Lindsey.
You think Frank is worse?
Reeves: Oh, Yeah.
Ryder: ‘Cause you know you'd have a shot with Lindsay.
On their happily ever after:
Reeves: I think [Frank and Lindsay would make it as a couple] if they don't live together for the first year. They would have to go slow.
Ryder: They're both so set in their ways.
Reeves: They would have to have his and hers sides to the house.
Ryder: Oh, definitely.
Reeves: Three rooms. Your room, my room, and then a room where we can both go in together. I think we probably should do that. You have your own room, and then the room you share with the other person
Ryder: You go to your room and I’ll go to mine.
Reeves: You wanna do it?
Ryder: Yeah!
