When Jada Pinkett Smith sat down for a candid chat with her daughter, Willow, 17, she didn’t expect what was to come.
During an episode of their new Facebook series, Red Table Talk, Willow revealed to her mum and grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, that she used to cut her wrist at age 12.
“What? When were you cutting yourself?” the 46-year-old mum-of-two asked. “I didn’t see that part. Cutting yourself where?”
The 17-year-old confessed to her confused family that she used to cut her left wrist and showed them a small scar she still had.
She also revealed that after the success of “Whip My Hair” she was in “a grey area of, ‘Who am I'” and didn’t want to tour.
“Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?” she said of her thoughts during the time. “And after all of that kinda settled down and it was like a kind of lull, I was just listening to a lot of dark music.”
“It was just so crazy and I was plunged into this black hole, and I was cutting myself.”
Willow told her mum and grandmother that she experienced a lot of ’emotional pain’.
“But my physical circumstances weren’t reflecting that,” she said. “[It] makes it feel real instead of like a ghost, like, in your mind.”
You can watch Red Table Talk with the three women, which streams every Monday on Facebook.
