The man charged with the murder of his wife and 11-week-old baby girl will have his case returned to Rockhampton after he allegedly flew himself to Brisbane to hand himself into police.

Matthew Cox, 31, was charged with two counts of murder (domestic violence offences) after police found the bodies of his 30-year-old wife Tayla Cox and their 11-week-old daughter, Murphy Margaret.

Queensland Police discovered the two bodies after being called to the Bean Street house in Park Avenue, Rockhampton, on August 10.

The welfare check came after Mr Cox allegedly attended a Brisbane police station and reported two dead people at the address.

Police also declared a second crime scene at an apartment complex on Constance Street in Fortitude Valley where Mr Cox is believed to had been staying while in Brisbane.

Police will allege the bodies had been in the home since at least August 8.

The television advertising executive did not appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court when his matter was briefly mentioned on Monday.

The court was told the case will return to Rockhampton Magistrates Court for further mention on December 6.

It’s understood a grant of legal aid has also been made by Mr Cox, which will be assessed in Rockhampton.

Mr Cox remains in custody and has not applied for bail, as bail can’t be granted for murder in the magistrates court.

In a statement to the media in August, Mr Cox’s parents Denis and Linda said they were devastated by the news about the alleged murders.

“We have lost a beautiful daughter-in-law Tayla, but also our much loved granddaughter Murphy,” the statement reads.

“At this stage we have very few other details and are in an absolute state of shock.

“We ask that the media respect our privacy while we grieve and try and process what has occurred.”
