A Wicked movie is officially heading to cinemas
The long-awaited movie version of the hit musical Wicked is finally getting the go-ahead.
Universal Pictures confirmed that a big screen version of the cult fave will hit cinemas in December 2021.
It had originally been on the schedule for this December but we’re sure the extra wait will be worth it!
Billy Elliot’s Stephen Daldry is still set to direct the film, with La La Land’s Marc Platt producing so we’re sure the project is in great hands.
Winnie Holzman and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz are reteaming for the screenplay adaption.
Marc, Winnie and Stephen all worked on the Broadway show which debuted in 2003 and went on to win three Tony Awards.
Based on a 1995 book by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked” is a reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz” told from the perspective of the witches.
No cast has been announced yet, and it doesn’t look like we’ll get much updates about that any time soon.
But fans are already throwing names like Glee’s Lea Michele and singer Ariana Grande into mix.
