Why Jennifer Hudson Was Suspended for Following Her Mom's Advice in High School

On a recent episode of her daytime talk show, Jennifer Hudson opened up about how her mother's well-intentioned advice ended up getting her suspended when she was in high school—and fans couldn't get enough of the relatable story.

It all started when a throwback photo of the singer in her senior year brought back a meaningful memory for Hudson.

"This is when I was, what, like 17 years old?" Hudson said, looking at the photo on a screen. "I was getting ready to graduate from high school, and this reminds me, not of picture day, but it reminds me of the first time I got suspended."

The Dream Girls star went on to clarify that it was the "first and only time she ever got suspended," and it was all her "mother's fault."

"I was being obedient, I listened to my mama, yes ma'am," she insisted.

"I was in high school, and this girl kept picking on me, y'all," Hudson continued. "She just kept picking on me, so of course I went home and I told my mama, I'm like, 'This girl keeps bothering me, every day.' And she was like, 'If you want to fight somebody, you ain't gonna stand there and talk. And if you make an example out of somebody one good time...they won't bother you no more.'"

At school the next day, the girl continued to bully Hudson.

"All I heard was my mama say, 'All you gotta do is make an example out of somebody one good time,'" she recalled. "And I said shh! Bam! And knocked her out. And then when I got home, I was like, 'Well mama, I did what you said to do, okay?'"

While Hudson got in trouble at school for the incident, she pointed out that her "mama was right, because that girl never bothered me again."

Followers loved hearing the anecdote from Hudson's past, with many agreeing that her mom's advice was sound even if she did end up getting suspended.

"This story is everything! 😂😍" raved one fan.

"I know about that 'one good time' home training! 😂❤️" commented someone else.

"I know that's right! 👊🏼" agreed a third Instagram user.
