On Wednesday’s Live! With Kelly and Michael, the hosts sat down with Hartnett, who’s a first-time father to a 5-month-old daughter with his girlfriend, English actress Tamsin Egerton, 27.

“She’s the apple of my eye, she’s perfect in every way,” said the Penny Dreadful star, 37, about his new daughter.

But when Michael Strahan asks Hartnett if he’s getting any sleep, he deadpans in a way every new parent would: “No, none at all.”

Kelly Ripa then goes on to inquire about how having a baby has changed Hartnett, noting about having kids, “I always say, ‘It puts everything in perspective,’ right?”

“It puts things in a totally new perspective, of course,” Hartnett says. “Your ego just melts away when you have a new kid — your heart leaves your body, and you give it permission to walk around with someone else for a while.”

He also adds that even though the feeling is overwhelming, he can’t imagine life any differently now and loves his new normal.

“It’s really terrifying, but it’s beautiful. I love it more than anything — I wish I would’ve started earlier,” Hartnett admits with a smile. “But I’m so glad that she is the one that I’m raising.”

The actor says his perspective on work has changed, too, noting he’s more focused on working to support his family than the exact direction his career is going.

While the couple have kept most of the news surrounding their new daughter private, Egerton has given a peek into the couple’s life as new parents. In January, The Brothers Grimsby star shared an Instagram shot of herself up for a late-night feeding.

“3am feeds!” she captioned the shot, complete with the hashtag “#whoneedssleep.”

“The best moments are when you get those individual moments alone in the middle of the night,” Hartnett says, adding that while Egerton is in charge of middle-of-the-night feedings, he’s on diaper duty. “Those moments are the most precious things.”
