Making a Murderer filmmakers don't have high hopes for Steven Avery's release

Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi, the filmmakers behind the Netflix ratings runaway Making a Murderer, say they don't hold high hopes for Steven Avery's release.

The documentary follows the conviction of Steven Avery for the 2005 rape and murder of Teresa Halbach — a life sentence that came two years after the Wisconsin man was released for wrongly serving an 18-year rape sentence.

Demos and Ricciardi appeared on Channel Seven’s Sunrise on Thursday to chat about what made the first season so popular and if they think avery will ever be released from jail.

"That’s a possibility but both Steven and Brendan - as convicted murderers - they face incredible odds as does anyone convicted of a crime,” Demos said.

The filmmakers also hit back at accusations they purposely kept out snippets of information for the good of the show. For example in depth details about Avery’s past animal cruelty charge and the fact he requested Halbach as his photographer – according to testimony.

“We documentary filmmakers we did not set out to convict or exonerate and we needed to distill the material we had. We had voluminous material and the question is whether what was excluded was of real significance and in our opinion it was not,” Ricciardi said.

The pair said they remain open to the possibility of a second season.
