Making a Murderer Theories People Are Talking About Now

Could a serial killer have murdered freelance photographer Teresa Halbach in 2005?

That’s one of the theories making the rounds in the wake of the popularity of the 10-part docuseries Making a Murderer, in which filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi investigate Halbach’s killing and the subsequent trials of Steven Avery, the man on which whose property Halbach’s remains were found, and Avery’s nephew Brendan Dassey, whose testimony, later recanted, helped land both life sentences.

Since the series first streamed on Netflix Dec. 18, armchair detectives have been poring over evidence in the case of Avery, who claims he has been framed by local authorities in retaliation for seeking damages over a wrongful conviction of rape for which he had already served 18 years in jail. In a letter to a local reporter, Avery, 53, insisted, “The killer is still out there.”

John Cameron, a former police sergeant specialising in cold cases, says that Edward Wayne Edwards, who pleaded guilty to five murders in March 2011 but died in an Ohio prison a month later, was the person behind Halbach’s death and cited Edwards’s tendency to kill on Halloween, his presence in Manitowoc County at the time of Halbach’s disappearance and his penchant for pegging his crimes on others as proof.
