It Takes Two: Georgia and Jimmy Leave 'X Factor'

The first double elimination of the season came fast and furious last night, and claimed two of this season’s most charming competitors. Despite her preternatural vocal abilities and easygoing stage presence, fifteen-year-old Georgia Denton may have been hampered — if judges James Blunt, Guy Sebastian and Chris Isaak surmised — by a difficult song choice: The Jackson 5's I’ll Be There. And even after being lauded by the judges for finally showing his most authentic self onstage, lovable Jimmy Davis’ take on The Killers’ ‘When You Were Young’ wasn’t enough to save him.

WHO talked to Denton and Davis about their time on the show, what they plan to do next and who they reckon might take the crown.

GEORGIA DENTON

Georgia, how are you today? Have you had much sleep?
Not really! I think I went to bed at about midnight and got up at six. And I’ve been talking about myself all day.

Georgia says goodbye

How are you feeling this morning?
I felt like I kind of expected it, but ultimately I’m sad to leave the competition. But there’s so much I can take away from it.

Why did you expect it?
I just had a feeling… I guess how the judges reacted to my performance on Monday just made me think that I was going to go home, or at least be in the bottom two.

Was your family with you at the set last night?
Well, we live in Melbourne so it was just my mum. Because I have to have a guardian, she’s here with me. She was fine. I think she’s kind of relieved she’s not going to have so much stress because I think she was taking it all on for me.

When we talked a few weeks ago, you said you were worried you were going to get sick of each other living together in Sydney. Did that happen?
Ummm… I don’t think I should say yes!

Looking back, what do you think you could have done differently?
I don’t think I could have done anything differently. I did my best with the songs I was given, and tried to put as much of myself into them as I possibly could.

Dannii faced a lot of criticism for her song choices this week from the other judges. Do you think it was fair?
No, I don’t think so. I think – I loved the song that she gave me. I really, really enjoyed performing.

Who do you see going all the way at this point?
It could be anyone’s game—they are such amazing, talented people. The Overs, both Natalie and Louise, have incredible voices. Cyrus has a great shot of winning. And I love Matt and Jess. I’ve become really close to them.

What do you think you learned about yourself through the competition?
I guess I realised that I can handle quite a lot. And I have thicker skin than I thought.

What will you do next?
I’ll take a week or so off and spend time with my family and wind down, I guess. I will definitely be riding my horse. Then I’ll be back for the grand final. From there, I’ll just take and seize opportunities that follow, try to write music and just figure out what type of music I want to keep writing and performing. I only left yesterday, so it’s a lot to take in.

JIMMY DAVIS

Jimmy, how are you feeling this morning?
I have had four hours’ sleep, and my night was actually pretty nice. After the show I had a couple glasses of wine and just chilled out with Louise and it was, man, it was like a bit weight lifted off my shoulders. I’m not stressed about doing next week’s song, but rather how I’m going to further my career now.

That may actually be a bigger stress.
Maybe. But I have more control over it now, you know?

Jimmy's X Factor journey comes to an end

Did you feel like it might be your time to go?
I put up a post online at 10am yesterday, pretty much admitting defeat. I didn’t feel confident in my position and I’m no Disney pop princess and not exactly appealing to the masses. That’s just my market, I admit, and I’m happy with what it is.

Isn’t that ironic, given the judges said your performance finally showcased the real Jimmy Davis?
Maybe if I got to be myself a bit more I would have lasted longer. Not that I wasn’t allowed to be myself, but it can be hard to get it across. I really had to work for it and others were a lot better with the select words they said on camera. That’s just something you can’t be taught.

What do you think you could have done differently?
Well, on that first live show I would have fought against wearing the jockstrap! I probably wouldn’t have been so stiff. But with this last performance? Eh, I got to arrange that myself, man. The backing track they used on the live show was half produced myself in my bedroom at the hotel. So that made me happy – it was the closest thing to having my own song on national TV. I think all of my performances were as classy as I could have made them. I don’t look back and think, ‘Ew, didn’t want to do that!’ Except for walking like a stick man.

What do you think you’ll do next?
My plan at the moment is to work on my website and basically get people to subscribe to it. They’ll get a free download of one of my songs and that way I can start sending out newsletters for when I announce my tour. My plan is to get back on the road, come back to Sydney and get the band back together, and record either an EP or an album and start touring. I want to be on the festival circuit—it’s where I’ve lived my whole life and what I love.

Who do you see going all the way at this point?
Louise has a pretty good chance of getting up to the top. She’s something different and she’s got some power behind her. I reckon she has a good shot, but at the end of day comes down to the teenybopper market and she doesn’t appeal to that. That’s the problem: if it were a show directed at adults, Louise would win it. Hands down. I adore her.

What do you think you learned about yourself through the competition?
I learned that I am one of the most hard-headed people ever. I think I am very stubborn. [Laughs] And I’ve been reassured I’m not good at being told what to do!

And are you leaving town in that famous Kombi van of yours?
You know what? I sold it before I went on the show! I miss it so much. I’ve got a Mercedes Vito now. You press the button and it makes a cool noise… plus, it doesn’t have any holes in the floor.
