Candice Falzon: 'Motherhood brought out my softer side'

She concedes she never wanted to be a wife or mother, but ask Ironwoman Candice Falzon to name her greatest accomplishment, and it’s not winning three world championships, or her 20 Australian national titles.

“I’ve achieved a lot in my career, but for me, motherhood is my biggest achievement,” she tells WHO of welcoming daughter Ivy Mae with Australian cricketer David Warner in September.

The 30-year-old says her “perfect little girl” has brought out a maternal side she never thought she was capable of—a side that was on display when they posed for WHO’s Most Beautiful People issue in Sydney on March 19.

“I’m embracing motherhood,” says Falzon, who will wed Warner, 28, this year. "It’s brought out a softer side."

Growing up as a “real tomboy” alongside two brothers in Sydney’s Maroubra, Falzon, who emerged as her sports youngest-ever professional competitor at age 14, had never envisioned getting married or having kids.

“At first when I had a girl I thought, ‘Well, this is going to be interesting,’” she concedes. “I was the type who, if anyone had kids around, I felt awkward and uncomfortable holding them.”

These days, she’s a natural: “The love and joy that Ivy gives, it’s really beautiful to see,” says Falzon. “Now I want to have a really big family!”
