Australian artist [au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/who/latest-news/article/-/15628595/this-weeks-who-the-most-intriguing-people-of-2012/|Gotye] has crowned his phenomenal global success by taking the coveted Record Of The Year award at this year's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

The Aussie singer's song, featuring Kimbra, Somebody That I Used to Know, took the top award by beating The Black Keys, Kelly Clarkson, fun. featuring Janelle Monae, Taylor Swift and Frank Ocean and marks the first time an Aussie has won the record of the year title since Olivia Newton John in 1975 for her hit I Honestly Love You.

“I'm grateful to everyone at home for their constant support,” said Gotye. “It's been amazing and I don't take it for granted.”

The award was the third of the night for Gotye, real name Wally De Backer, at the US's music industry celebration.

Earlier he picked up best pop duo performance with Kiwi singer Kimbra for Somebody That I Used To Know and best alternative album for Making Mirrors.

“I'm particularly pleased that my album Making Mirrors has been acknowledged as well as the single,” he said. “Hopefully this means there's a place for adventurous, interesting music out there and for completely silly music too!”

Somebody That I Used To Know has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide, was No.1 in 18 countries and in the key US market it was was the biggest selling single in 2012 where it sat on top of Billboard's Hot 100 in the US for eight straight weeks.

“I recorded it mostly in a barn on my dad's block of land southeast of Melbourne, Australia, so I have to thank Dad and my Mum for setting up a lot of weird equipment in a barn near their house,” the 32-year-old told the awards audience.

Kimbra added: “I obviously have one major person to thank and that is Gotye, Wally De Backer, for having me be part of this incredible song and this incredible journey.”
