When Kim Kardashian shared the first photo of her and Kanye West’s newborn baby boy, Psalm West, fans were thrilled and congratulated the couple on their beautiful addition to the family.

However a closer look at the image, which shows little Psalm sleeping in what looks like a baby lounger, has sparked concern amongst some, including infant sleep specialist Erika Lamour.

The Sydney-based founder of The Sleep Dept, says Kim and Kanye “need to be a bit more responsible and understand just how much influence they have”, as there were several issues she identified Psalm’s sleeping setup – from the padding, to the beanie and loose cords attached to the cot.

“Thick padded bumpers are a suffocation risk and SIDS guidelines advise AGAINST using any,” Erika wrote on Instagram.

She also noted Psalm was wearing a beanie while asleep, and explained, “Beanies on a sleeping baby are also dangerous as it can cause overheating AND has the potential to fall off baby’s head and onto face”.

Erika then spoke about the nature of baby sleep loungers like the one in the photo, saying they should be “used for supervised sleep only”.

She acknowledged that Psalm may very well have been supervised in this instance, but that “millions of women who see this might just see a baby sleeping peacefully in a comfy looking product”.

“Plus, all baby sleeper lounger products state that leaving a baby unattended in one of these can result in serious injury or death,” she added.

According to the Australian Department of Health’s website, SUID (Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy) “may be the result of a serious illness or a problem that baby may have been born with, but most SUDI deaths occur as a result of either SIDS or a fatal sleep accident”.

It advises parents to ensure that children are placed on their backs to sleep, heads remain uncovered, the mattress is firm and fits the cot, and that “pillows, duvets, lambs wool, cot bumpers and soft toys” have been removed.
