It’s been five years since Australian musician Jacob Lee starred on the local season of The Voice, and while some contestants struggle to make the transition from reality TV star to independent artist, Jacob Lee has managed to do just that.

The now 24-year-old, who appeared on the Channel Nine show in 2014, has two EPs and an album under his belt, and has already toured the UK and Europe.

Speaking to Build Series Sydney, the Aussie reveals his current style of music is very different to some of the mainstream tracks he had to sing while being coached by will.i.am on The Voice.

“Honestly, they actually give you a lot of the songs you’re going to sing,” he explained to host Kate Peck.

“You don’t really get to choose... they were quite interested in having me look more like a boy band character as well.

“So that’s why I sang Story Of My Life - One Direction on the show.”

Jacob explained he had no regrets about doing the show, but is glad he’s since been able to truly showcase what his passion for music is all about.

“It’s still a great song and I loved performing it and it was a good experience,” he said.

“But the stuff I was writing before the show and after the show was actually quite similar [to his current work], I just didn’t get a chance to show that on TV.”

Now the musician has released his first track for 2019, Conscience, off the back of his debut album, Philosophy, which was released last year.

This week the Queensland-based star has been teasing fans ahead of the release of his next track, Zen.

“ZEN.Pre-order is NOW AVAILABLE via my Story,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Send me a screenshot of your pre-order & I’ll personally DM you the chorus lyrics.”
