If you’re one of those people who gets a little thrill from splurging on a new pair of leggings, here’s one washing warning you need to heed now.
With good activewear not coming cheap, one expert has revealed there’s a common mistake a lot of us are making when it comes to making sure our gym clothes last the distance.
According to Sally Dixon, founder of active wear brand Every Second Counts, it’s not simply a case of lobbing your sweaty clothes into the washing machine and doing your normal routine.
In fact, there’s one cardinal sin when it comes to getting your active wear clean – and that’s adding fabric softener.

“This is like kryptonite for sports kit!” Sally told Cosmopolitan.
“Fabric softener can damage the technical properties of a sports fabric and remove it’s abilities to be sweat-wicking, anti-bacterial, etc.”
For those of us who’ve spent hundreds of dollars on gym gear and understandably want to keep it in good nick, Sally has one tip that’s easy enough to do – try and wash your dirty clothes as soon as possible.
“Leaving gym kit to fester will do just that, fester bacteria and ingrain smells which will be tough to get out no matter how many technical properties the fabric has,” she explained.
If you’re a lunch-time gym bunny who has no choice but to wash later, Sally advises hanging up your clothes to let the sweat dry before washing them with your other clothes in order to minimise bacteria spreading between your clothes.
