Watch ‘Yellowstone’s Jefferson White & Neal McDonough Go At It In Short ‘The Writer’

When you make as many shows as Taylor Sheridan, everybody pitches in. Above, watch a clip from the short film The Writer, featuring a scene between Jefferson White (he plays Jimmy Hurdstom in Yellowstone) and Neal McDonough (he plays the nasty Cal Thresher in Tulsa King, and a much nastier land thief Malcolm Beck in Yellowstone) go at it. The younger man steps into his late father’s cabin to become a successful writer. Just like his neglectful father did, the scribe devalues his wife and child to chase someone else’s idea of success. McDonough plays the acrid spirit of the title character’s dead father, a looming presence still fomenting insecurity and doubt in his son.

Pic marks the writing/directing debut of Austin Glasser and Luke Madenwald. Austin is the son of Yellowstone EP David Glasser, and he cut his teeth doing odd jobs as production assistant for the series Tulsa King and 1883. When he confessed his ambition to form a production company with his partner and make a calling card short, the actors stepped right up, along with DP Ben McBurnett, a camera operator on many of the series, and the propmaster served as assistant propmaster on Bass Reeves. Today, Landman star Demi Moore is hosting a screening of a short which is being submitted for Oscar consideration, Mayor of Kingstown EP Antoine Fuqua is doing a virtual conversation with the filmmakers.
