Here’s how to watch ‘Black Is King,’ a film by Beyoncé

By now, you may have heard that Beyoncé is releasing a new visual album called “Black Is King” on Friday, Jul. 31. However, there’s only one place to watch it, and that’s on Disney Plus.

This is Beyoncé’s second visual album, the first being “Lemonade,” which aired exclusively on HBO in 2016. However, this time around, Disney Plus seems like a more appropriate outlet, as the film is a reimagined story of “The Lion King.” Furthermore, the music is based on the soundtrack for the 2019 remake of the Disney classic, which was curated by the 24-time Grammy award-winning singer.

“Black Is King” follows Black families throughout time, focusing on a “young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity,” as his ancestors guide him toward his destiny on the throne, Disney Plus’ show page reads.

In an interview with Good Morning America on Jul. 30, Beyoncé said that she worked with a diverse group of directors, actors and creatives from all over the world on the project over the course of a year. Scenes are set in her own backyard, Johannesburg, Ghana, London, Belgium and the Grand Canyon.

“The narrative unfolds through music videos, fashion, dance, beautiful natural settings and raw new talent,” she said, adding, “My hope for this film is that it shifts the global perception of the word ‘Black,’ which has always meant inspiration and love and strength and beauty to me. But ‘Black Is King’ means Black is regal and rich in history, in purpose and in lineage.”

The film will premiere at 3 a.m. EST/12 a.m. PST on Friday, Jul. 31. If you’re not already a subscriber, you’ll need to get Disney Plus to watch.

Unfortunately, Disney Plus suspended its 7-day free trial ahead of its last big release, “Hamilton: An American Musical,” so you’ll have to sign yourself up for a monthly or annual subscription. The monthly subscription costs $6.99 per month, while the annual costs $69.99 for the year.

Disney Plus also offers a bundle deal with Hulu and ESPN+ for $12.99 per month for more movies and shows outside of the Disney umbrella, as well as live sporting events.

Disney Plus launched in November 2019 as Disney’s exclusive streaming service for airing its classic animated movies, as well as new shows and films. The service also streams content from Pixar, Marvel, National Geographic and “Star Wars.”

Of course, its new “Star Wars” series, “The Mandalorian,” which premiered as part of the streaming service’s original launch brought the world Baby Yoda. So if you need any other reason besides “Black Is King” to subscribe to Disney Plus, do it for Baby Yoda.
