Wading For Change BIPOC Filmmakers Grant Award Recipients Revealed
5 Point Film, in collaboration with Fat Tire and Mountains of Color Film Festival, has revealed the recipients of the second annual Wading for Change BIPOC Filmmakers Grant.
This grant, established by Sofia Jaramillo and Jr Rodriguez, aims to center BIPOC voices within the adventure film industry. The $20,000 grant has been split between two creatives: David Yousling for Beyond the Saddles and Mallory Duncan for Night Writers.
First-time filmmaker Yousling’s Beyond the Saddles follows non-binary runner Blank Bruno exploring identity and finding community through trail running, set against the backdrop of the trails of Prescott, Arizona.

As 5 Point Flagship Festival alumni with his second film, Duncan’s Night Writers explores the stylistic and ideological connections between graffiti artists and street skiers by way of a ski mask.
Both of the films will premiere at 5 Point’s Flagship Festival in April.
The Wading For Change – BIPOC Filmmaker’s Grant is the result of a collaboration between a group of BIPOC filmmakers who were working on their first film together, titled Wading for Change. In partnership with Fat Tire, 5Point Film Festival, and Mountains of Color Film Festival, these filmmakers sought to expand opportunities for filmmakers and photographers of color to tell stories that elevate representation in the realm of nature.
“As creatives of color, we know firsthand the barriers to entry and difficulties of working in the creative industry,” ,” stated Sofia Jaramillo, one of the grant’s founders. “We want to address those barriers by encouraging other BIPOC creatives and creating opportunities.”
