Versace casts three plus-size models for first time ever at Milan Fashion Week: ‘We made history’

Versace is taking a step toward body inclusivity with the help of three plus-size models.

Precious Lee, Jill Kortleve and Alva Claire stunned on the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week wearing Versace’s 2021 spring/summer collection. The new selection had an aquatic theme inspired by nature, which meant Lee, Kortleve and Claire were decked out in vibrant dresses with bold prints and colorful crop tops.

The fashion house used kitschy prints with shells, seahorses, starfish and flowers in punchy blues, greens and oranges. Some of the prints even referenced Versace’s Spring 1992 collection “Trésor de la Mer.”

Lee, Kortleve and Claire each took to Instagram to celebrate the historic moment.

“I’m so emotional writing this, to walk for the iconic Versace has always been a huge dream of mine!” Claire wrote. “I am so proud of @preciousleexoxo @jilla.tequila and myself we made history with this and I will never forget how I feel right now! This moment is for all of us! I’m full of love!”

The model posted a photo of herself wearing a hip-hugging, yellow maxi dress with a starfish print and orange platform shoes.

“History. @jilla.tequila and @alvaclaire you two amazing women are stunning and I couldn’t be more proud to share this with you,” Lee said. “I will never forget this moment and how I felt before walking out. The power and beauty of this brand has always inspired me and now to be the first…wow.”

In Lee’s post, she is strutting her stuff in a striped crop top with a long black skirt. The skirt features a small cutout that shows a bit of skin at the hip.

“This is such a historical moment and I can’t believe it actually happened,” Kortleve stated. “I’m still shaking. I’m so so so proud of us @alvaclaire @preciousleexoxo. It’s so unbelievable to work for brands I always dreamt of working for. I hope that we open the doors for a new generation with the same dreams but who never saw themselves in the magazines or the commercials.”

Kortleve wore a sleeveless a-line dress with a full skirt on the runway. The blue and green dress featured a large-scale seashell print and an orange harness.

While the industry still has much to do with regards to inclusivity, major labels like Tommy Hilfiger and Fendi have featured plus-size models on the runway too. Hopefully things are finally changing.
