Vanilla Ice recalls his reaction to Madonna’s marriage proposal in the ‘90s

Vanilla Ice has shared how “crazy it was” when Madonna proposed to him during their brief courtship in the Nineties.

The Ice Ice Baby rapper, real name Robert Van Winkle, dated Madonna, 64, for a short period after meeting at one of his New York Palladium shows.

“Things were going so crazy and fast, man,” the 55-year-old recalled on the Just Jenny with Jenny Hutt podcast on Tuesday.

He said: “I was just like, ‘What?! I thought the guy was supposed to do that [propose]. What do you mean? Wait a minute. This is too fast. I’m just getting started here and I’m way too young for this!’

“So, yeah. It was crazy. The more I think about it the more crazy it was.”

Recalling their first meeting when he was in his early twenties, the star shared that he saw the Material Girl singer, then in her thirties, in the crowd at his show “dancing her ass off”.

The rapper remembered Madonna coming to his dressing room after his show to say hello and admitted that he was “intimidated” because of her star status.

He continued: “I remember she came back to the dressing room and said hello to me, and she kind of gave me the sexy eyes and I was like… ‘Well she’s really too old for me, so I must be mistaken on that.’”

However the late SBK Records co-founder Charles Koppelman, who was Jenny Hutt‘s father, told the music star that Madonna was interested in him and set up a date between the two at The Palm restaurant in New York.

Following a successful date, the pair began dating.

However, their romance was short-lived because Madonna put him in her 1992 book Sex without his consent.

The rapper explained that the two were still dating when the book came out but he was unaware of it being published due to his busy career.
