Van Leeuwen Drops a “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” Ice Cream Flavor. Here’s What We Really Thought
The limited-edition SLC Scoop is now being served in Van Leeuwen shops nationwide.
The SLC Scoop is just like The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City: salty and sweet!
Van Leeuwen, known for its unique flavors, debuted the limited-edition flavor on Nov. 19 with the help of stars Angie Katsanevas, Mary Cosby and Bronwyn Newport.
The Rockefeller Center location was transformed with fake snow, glitter snowflakes and RHOSLC quotes as it invited VIP guests and media to get a taste of the ice cream. It featured a sign emblazoned with an adaptation of Heather Gay’s iconic season four quote: “Receipts. Scoops. Timelines. Screenshots.”
PEOPLE was on-hand for the event, and got to taste the flavor.
The SLC Scoop is a purple-colored lavender ice cream with salted caramel pieces.
"We're excited to partner with The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City to create a flavor that reflects the fun nature of the show," co-founder and CEO Ben Van Leeuwen shared in a statement. "We can't wait for fans to try this limited-edition ice cream that brings together ingredients as dynamic and unforgettable as the show itself!"
The three housewives at the event loved the flavor.
Cosby, who said she doesn’t eat sugar but that she would “secretly” indulge in ice cream, tells PEOPLE that the flavor accurately represented the reality show cast. “(The) salty caramel lavender ice just matches Salt Lake City’s housewives because that’s what we are — salty and savory, but yet there’s a lavender side,” she says
Katsanevas says her favorite ice cream flavor is bubblegum, but she was excited to get into a more sophisticated flavor. "I’ve never been a salty ice cream girl, but this one with the caramel looks sweet and salty, so it’s perfect.”
While Bronwyn Newport loved the amount of salt and the lavender flavor of the treat, she acknowledged one discrepancy between herself and the ice cream. “I think it could be a little saltier if it was going to portray me, but as an average of the cast, it’s a good amount of salty,” she says.
So how does the ice cream fare for the average taster?
It's sweet, with a vanilla-tasting base. Lavender comes through at the end, but it’s subtle enough for someone who doesn’t typically enjoy at the flowery flavor (like this taste tester). Those salt and caramel flavors add a new dimension, though some more salted caramel pieces would make it all the better.
Still, the consistency is creamy, and the ice cream doesn’t melt too quickly. Plus, the pretty lavender color adds to the experience. All and all, an ice cream that leads up to its name.
