Una Stubbs, Sherlock and Till Death Us Do Part star, dies aged 84

British TV legend Una Stubbs has died at the age of 84, her agent confirmed in a statement.

The star, known for her roles in Sherlock, Worzel Gummidge, Till Death Us Do Part and In Sickness And In Health, passed away at her home in Edinburgh surrounded by her family.

"We are desperately sad to have lost not only a wonderful actress, whose screen and stage career, spanning over 50 years, was so extraordinarily varied," her agent Rebecca Blond said.

"But also a wickedly funny, elegant, stylish, graceful, gracious and kind and constant friend."

Her career also included memorable performances on stage in the West End, at the Old Vic, Donmar Warehouse, Sheffield Crucible and National Theatre.

Reports suggest the star had been ill for a few months.

Una's family also commented on their tragic loss, writing: "Mum passed away quietly today with her family around her, in Edinburgh. We ask for privacy and understanding at this most difficult and sad of times."

Una Stubbs was born in Hertfordshire in 1937 and first appeared on TV in the 50s.

In recent years, Una was best known for playing Mrs. Hudson in the BBC reimagining of Sherlock.

But she had enjoyed a long and varied career with roles in Sir Cliff Richard's movie Summer Holiday, which was her first big role in 1963, and as Rita, the exasperated daughter of Alf Garnett in Til Death Do us Part.

She went on to star in several television shows and was loved by a generation of children as Aunt Sally in Worzel Gummidge from 1979 to 1981.

She was also known for the game shows Don't Say A Word and Give Us A Clue.

Since news of her passing broke tributes have poured in for the beloved actress.

Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley took to Twitter, writing: "Devastated to hear about the passion of the brilliant Una Stubbs. My thoughts go out to her family and friends at this very sad time."

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss also offered an emotional post: "It was one of the great joys of my life to work so closely with and to adore Una Stubbs. She was a wonderful, wonderful woman and a great and serenely graceful actor. Mischief was in her blood. We were so blessed that she became our imperishable Mrs Hudson. Goodbye, darling,"

Actor Alistair Petrie, who appeared with Stubbs on the crime series, was also among those to pay tribute.

"Dear gorgeous Una Stubbs. What a sad sad loss. She was and will remain such a beating heart of Sherlock and a billion other things, not least her family," he wrote on Twitter.

"I totally fell in love with her. She is (I’ll never say was) an incomparable human of loveliness."
