Yahoo Lifestyle ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 Finale Brought Everything to an Emotional But Confusing End
*Major spoilers for season 4 of The Umbrella Academy below!*
The time has come Brellies: it's officially time to say goodbye to The Umbrella Academy. After four seasons, several timelines, so many apocalypses, and tons of dead baddies, our favorite group of superpowered humans are off one one last mission to save the world and their brother one last time. No pressure right? Well, considering that this is also the last season, the stakes have certainly never been higher. Add some bad news in there and, well, let's just say you better have some tissues as this series comes to an end.
Here is the ultimate break down of the The Umbrella Academy season 4 finale as the series ends.
Okay, there's like another apocalypse going on, right?
Yeah, so there's this thing called "The Cleanse" that some people actually believe that will clean all the timelines, when actually it'll bring the end of the world. So, ya know, just another day for this superhero family.
The episode actually begins with Gene (who we actually know is really Abigail) and Jean asking the fast food worker girl from the last episode to play "Map of the Problematique" by Muse (iconique) over the radio which activates everyone who is part of The Keepers together at the Tattfords department store where Ben and Jennifer are. They are to keep them in there and make sure they don't get out so The Cleanse can happen so they can "return to their rightful lives." Sure, Jean...
Viktor along with Reginald arrive at the scene. Dear old Reggie wants to kill Ben once and for good (again), but Viktor convinces him to give him a chance to talk to Ben. Viktor tries to talk to Jean and "Gene" to convince them to let him in, but they refuse. Jean realizes that something is up with "Gene" because the song he is whistling is the same one that he said he hated before. As she's gotten too close to the truth, "Gene" kills her by slicing her with a sword and tells the followers that she was the one that turned away from the group and he only killed her so their plan can continue.
Wait, where is everyone else?
They're all actually meeting up over at Lila's parents' place for a rendezvous. That's where they find out that Lila and Five have actually been gone for six years and have fallen in love with each other even though it's technically only been like 1 hour in their timeline.
In the meantime though, Viktor successfully sneaks into the store after killing a random dude who couldn't mind his own business and find Ben and Jennifer together with "The Cleanse" taking over as the marigold and durango within their bodies, respectively, start to interact with each other. It's also causing Ben to act against his will as The Cleanse starts to protect itself against everything.
Viktor tries to convince Ben to leave Jennifer, but when Viktor reveals that dear old dad is the one that's calling to check in on them, The Cleanse reacts by attacking Viktor. At the same time, the family are riding over to the department store after finding out via a TV report that Ben is there.
Which means...
That's right...BABY SHARK DO DO DO DO DO-DO!!!!
The family heads over but due to some broken breaks, their plan to try to sneak in fails and they have to fight their way through the crowd. Although they try, they realize that they're outnumbered and Five and Lila successfully blink them inside instead.
Viktor, attempting to try to reason with Ben once again, touches his shoulder and sees a vision of an ideal perfect world. However, one of Reggie's shooters gets a little too trigger happy and shoots Ben causing The Cleanse to react further as Ben and Jennifer also make contact again. They start to merge and become one bigger creature which triggers a showdown involving the whole family...well, except for Diego and Five who instead start to fight each other over Lila.
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
Yeah, but it's kind of unfair when you're fighting the very thing that will end the entire world. But, hey, The Umbrella Academy aren't a bunch of quitters and they try their best to take The Cleanse down.
Five, however, does decide to leave and goes back to the subway where he ends up at a deli with a bunch of other Fives. There he learns are a bunch of other versions of himself from other timelines that also failed to save their own. One of the Fives explains to him that the reason why the apocalypse keeps happening is because of the very existence of The Umbrella Academy. Five realizes that the only way to finally balance everything out if they never existed. He goes back to try to share that with his family who has retreated back to their original home where they also meet up with Lila's family and Claire.
Reginald, seeing everything come to an end as well, decided to accept his fate as the world comes to an end. Abigail reveals herself as Gene and reveals that she planned to help end the world because this is was what was always meant to happen. They sit together peacefully accepting their end as The Cleanse comes and takes them away.
So what are the Brellies going to do?
After Five explains everything and Viktor also notes that the vision he saw is actually the ideal timeline, the family realizes that they have to cease to exist in order for everything to return to normal.
Lila takes her family and Claire to the subway so they can stay safe. Although it seems like Lila will also stay back with them, leaving the timeline fractured as all the marigold needs to be removed or else it won't work, she jumps off the train at the end to join the Hargreeves.
They stand around in a circle as The Cleanse gets closer to their place to spend their final moments together. Luther recommends that they share their favorite memories, but they all disagree to do that. As they set the marigold inside them free, they all connect together one last time as a true family and hope that they will somehow reunite again.
Did they do it? Is everything saved?
As we see all the timelines disappear, we go back to the main timeline where everything is...nice...normal! Not only that, but we also see some very familiar faces including The Handler, Grace, and other people that the Brellies encountered on their journeys. Reginald, in a voiceover, says, "On the twelfth hour on the eighth day of August 2024, absolutely nothing out of the ordinary occurred. You might say it was just a normal day."
And the show ends...
Really?! That's it?!
Well, that is until you get to the post-credit scene where we actually see eight marigold flowers bloom in the park bringing our favorite family together one last time and causing us to fully SOB all over our remotes.
And that's it! That's officially the end of The Umbrella Academy! Guess we'll see you in the ideal timeline for the next big show!
