Two-toed sloth celebrates her birthday with a socially-distanced party

Even sloths want to celebrate their birthdays, but this year they’ve got to social distance too.

A two-toed sloth named Vivien celebrated her third birthday at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh on August 18 where staff members threw her a socially-distanced party. Vivien had a two-tier cake made of corn, yellow squash, zucchini and sweet potato icing, topped with a hibiscus flower and a hard-boiled egg.

“People have an emotional connection to sloths,” Christa Gaus, manager of visitor experiences said in a press release. “They bring a smile to your face, which is something we can all use right now.”

National Aviary shared footage of the slow-moving animal nibbling her cake on Instagram. Vivien hangs from a metal bar upside down as she slowly munches a slice of zucchini.

In addition to the birthday girl, the National Aviary is also home to two sloths, Valentino and Wookie, who turned 20 years old the same week. The zoo is offering discounted tickets to its Sloth Encounters program until August 23 in celebration of the birthday animals. That means you can meet Vivien, hand-feed her and get to know the animals up close and personal.

“Seeing a sloth in person inspires visitors to think about how they can take action, and it deepens their connection,” Gaus said.
