The truth about being one of Australia's top beauty influencers

The rise of social media in the last decade has been a game changer in many industries, like the beauty and fashion industry.

Nikkia Joy is one of many who have changed their lives through sharing their makeup tips online.

Since posting her first YouTube video in 2013, Nikkia has gained over 700,000 subscribers on her channel, over 100,000 followers on Instagram and even has her own cosmetics line.

Her online journey started for one simple reason and that was to “help other men and women who didn’t feel confident enough with their own makeup skills”, Nikkia recently told Yahoo Lifestyle.

However, work in the beauty industry isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. The 28-year-old admitted there is “for sure” a toxic side to her world of work.

“There’s a lot of competitiveness that comes with this industry and you definitely learn early on who is genuine and who isn’t,” she explained.

But for Nikkia, the best way to deal with it is to just avoid it.

“My motto for dealing with toxic people is simply not to!” she said. “I’m a very positive, happy person and if someone is trying to drag me down I just won’t associate with them any further.”

Despite the trials and tribulations of the online beauty industry, Nikkia has found the majority of influencers in Australia are “kind and supportive” and everyone is “really great friends”.

So much so, the best of the best in the Aussie beauty industry have come together to host the ultimate beauty masterclass with Maxinstute and Sephora in Sydney this weekend.

Alongside fellow influencers Sammy Robinson, Chloe Morello, Michelle Crossan, Jade Tunchy and many more, Nikkia will be discussing and showing off her best beauty tips and tricks.

“I’m so excited to be surrounded by so many other people who are as passionate about beauty as I am!” Nikka said about the upcoming masterclass.

“It’s also so amazing to get the opportunity to meet people who follow my work – we only ever really get to speak our followers through our videos and I just love chatting about makeup with them in person.”
