We Tried Dolly Parton's Super Simple Ground Beef Casserole To See If It's Worth the Hype

Casseroles aren't really in thing in my family, but I wondered if my family was missing out or if we were rightfully skipping over the category of casseroles as a whole. There are so many variations out there that I'm sure they can't all be as bad as their titles sometimes make them sound. And if there was ever a person whose casserole recipe I'd trust it would most certainly be Dolly Parton’s.

As I’ve said in the past, “Dolly does no wrong.” Would I still feel that way after making her 5-Layer Casserole? According to Taste of Home, this is ground beef casserole is one of Dolly's signature dishes. Here's what happened when I made the recipe in my kitchen.

How to Make Dolly Parton’s 5-Layer Casserole

The recipe for the casserole is just as simple as the list of ingredients. Arrange the sliced potatoes in the bottom of a pan or casserole dish, top with the cooked ground beef, then a layer of sliced onions. Top with chopped tomatoes and green peppers and cover it all with aluminum foil. Pop the dish in the oven at 350° and let that baby cook for two hours. Yes, two hours! If you need to kill some time, turn on Dolly's classic movie, Steel Magnolias.

What I Thought of Dolly Parton’s 5-Layer Casserole

I love Dolly Parton and have since I was a little kid listening to country music on the red clay roads of eastern Georgia. I'm still of the belief that Dolly Parton as a person can do no wrong but her whole casserole lacked a lot of taste...like a whole lot. I riffed on the recipe by seasoning the beef a bit more because I was skeptical, but that still wouldn't have saved this dish.

Dolly's 5-layer casserole almost tasted like the star singer's attempt at Shepherd's pie, which only made me wish that I had just made Shepherd’s pie. I may need to try one more casserole recipe because as it currently stands, I feel like my family isn’t missing anything.

Tips for Making Dolly Parton’s 5-Layer Casserole

  1. Season every layer. Definitely season the meat but make sure to season each of the vegetables, hell throw seasoning all over the dish.

  2. Add a sauce. I think if there were some sort of sauce to carry the flavor and hold everything together this dish wouldn’t be so bad.
